Lemon essential oil is a cold-pressed citrus oil expressed from the peel of Citrus limon, and ours comes from Argentina. It's pressed from the outer rind, not distilled and not squeezed from the juice, and that gives it the smell of fresh, bright fruit. Because the oil comes off the peel, it also carries the furanocoumarins that make cold-pressed lemon phototoxic on skin, which distilled lemon oil does not.

The lemon is a hybrid of the citron and the bitter orange. Its site of origin is unknown, though northwest India has been proposed. The fruit reached Europe near southern Italy in the second century AD, and it was grown as an ornamental in early Islamic gardens. Columbus carried lemon seeds to Hispaniola in 1493. The oil is pressed from the aromatic zest of the fruit, and in the bottle it smells citrusy and sugary, with a slightly sour edge.
